The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), Ramfalbil Anchalik Committee, in collaboration with the GB Basumatary Trust observed the 23rd death anniversary of Garla Batha Basumatary, the then president of the ABSU at his burial ground at Habrubari under Serfanguri police station in Kokrajhar district on Thursday.

KOKRAJHAR: The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), Ramfalbil Anchalik Committee, in collaboration with the GB Basumatary Trust observed the 23rd death anniversary of Garla Batha Basumatary, the then president of the ABSU at his burial ground at Habrubari under Serfanguri police station in Kokrajhar district on Thursday.

As part of the programme, the president of Ramfalbil Anchalik Committee, ABSU hoisted the organizational flag at half-mast. The Chief Executive Member (CEM) of BTC, Pramod Boro paid glowing tribute to Daoharu Garla Batha Basumatary at his portrait. Raktima Basumatary, widow of Garla Batha Basumatary, paid homage in the burial ground.

Speaking on the occasion, the CEM of BTC, Pramod Boro said Daoharu Garla Batha Basumatary was the pioneer of the Bodoland Movement who sacrificed life for the betterment of the Bodo community. He said Daoharu Garla Batha Basumatary, former president of the ABSU, led the Bodoland movement with a true heart and was recognized by all as a leader of uncompromising nature in the historical and constitutional rights of the Bodos. He also said the BTC government had been giving due recognition and importance to the great Bodoi leaders who dedicated themselves to the society.

Boro said the government of BTC will erect a statue of Daoharu Garla Batha Basumatary at his burial place and a full-size statue in Ramfalbil near National HighWay 32-(C) to remember his contribution to the society. He said the council government will construct a boundary wall in the burial place, besides working for beautification. He also announced that Rs 25 lakh would be released for the GB Basumatary Trust for welfare work. He further assured that the council government would decide about building an institution in the line of Sujit Narzary (ABSU’s 1st Bodoland movement martyr), Bir Chilagang Basumatary (BLT’s founder chairman) and Bangbur Gwra Basumatary (NDFB’s 1st martyr) in 40 BTC constituencies to commemorate his contributions to the society.

Local MLA Lawrence Islary planted saplings in the premises of the burial ground of Daoharu Garla Batha Basumatary along with the chairman of GB Basumatary Trust Rajendra Mashahary. The president of the ABSU Dipen Boro, general secretary Khanindra Basumatary, former MCLA Jatirindra Brahma and leaders of local ABSU, ABWWF, DBHA, Boro Somaj, AATS and former president of DBHA Jogeswar Brahma also paid floral tribute at his portrait on the occasion.
