GUWAHATI: Changes in weather patterns are becoming more and more prominent in different places across the world and Guwahati is no different. This year the largest city in the northeastern region of the country is also suffering from the consequences of global warming.

The mercury levels touched 30 degrees Celcius on January 30, Monday. The Indian Meteorological Department has mentioned this to be the record-high temperature in Guwahati city in the month of January. The department has also mentioned that the increased maximum temperature represents more than five degrees Celcius deviation from the expected temperature. Also, the minimum temperature is 3.6 degrees Celcius higher than the expected value at this time of the year to reach 15 degrees.

This change in the climate trend was announced by the deputy director general of the Regional Meteorological Centre located in Guwahati, Sanjay O'Neil Shaw. He mentioned that this is the highest-ever temperature recorded in Guwahati since records began. According to the records, the previous highest was 29.8 degrees Celcius and was recorded on January 27, 2019.

The reports based on meteorological data of the region also showed that Guwahati was the warmest location of the entire Northeast Indian region on Monday. Guwahati was followed by Passighat and Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh and Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur in Assam in terms of temperatures where the maximum temperatures touched the 29 degrees Celcius mark.

The city hardly saw any cold days this winter as the temperatures remained daily moderate even during the days of peak winters proving to be effects of global warming and climate change. The lack of even a single spell of rain has pushed the temperatures further while leading to the deterioration of the air quality. The meteorological department has also predicted that the temperature is on a rising trend and might touch the 32 degrees mark as early as the weekend.
