A Correspondent

Joysagar: Due to the alleged government negligence and apathy, the Amguri Irrigation Plant (250 MW) has now become defunct. The local villagers and social organziations of the Amguri LAC area of Sivasagar district alleged that due to government negligence, valuable property and electric equipment of the plant were being stolen by miscreants. The Amguri Irrigation Project was launched during the 1990s and it covers about 60 villages and 150 paddy fields. About 1,000 local farmers were benefited from this multi-purpose irrigation project and during 1990-1996, the Amguri LAC farmers showed high productivity. But the multipurpose irrigation project is now lying defunct and the government too is showing no interest to revive the project. The farmers of Amguri LAC face scarcity of water, especially during the dry season, and hence production has also decreased comparatively. The local farmers and social organizations have demanded the government authorities to revive the irrigation project.
