Amid COVID Surge, Vaccination and COVID Testing Centres of Assam Under Water

Cachar: People of Dholai in the Cachar district of Assam are facing tough times. The number of COVID cases is rising, but they have nowhere to go for testing or vaccination and treatment as several of the primary healthcare centres in the area are under rainwater.

One person who visited one of the COVID testing centres on Thursday morning told sentinelassam.com that when he reached the centre, he found there was no one to help him with the tests.

Locals of the area have shared photos of the Dholai block primary health centre situated in Dholai Bazar under the Cachar district. The centre can be seen deserted and under rainwater. This is one of the COVID vaccination centres in Dholai.

With the yearly monsoons almost here and floods being a permanent phenomenon for Assam, one more time it is going to be a double whammy for the Assam government and the district administrations to handle COVID as well as floods. This will be the second year in a row that the Assam government will have to handle COVID and floods together.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has already taken review meetings and has directed the Water Resources Department under Minister Pijush Hazarika to expedite all flood management-related work and complete it in a month's time to minimise damage to lives, property, crop and cattle due to floods.

An amount of Rs 75 crore has already been released as an advance to be used for providing relief to people who could be affected by floods in the state.

The state government considers May 15 to September 15 as the flood-affected months.

Though the government and the district administrations are gearing up to tackle any flood situation, it might need more preparation and forward planning to ensure that the COVID care centres or vaccinations centres across Assam remain water logging free.

The State Disaster Management Authority has issued the SOP to be followed at the flood relief camps across Assam.
