GUWAHATI:Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached Guwahati on Thursday morning to begin his two-day election tour of Assam and West Bengal.

While in Guwahati, Union Minister Amit Shah paid floral tribute to former Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Deendayal Upadhyaya on his death anniversary.

Taking to Twitter to pay his respects for Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, Amit Shah said, "When the emphasis was being given on adapting the foreign model for the formation of independent India, it was Pandit ji who gave India's mantle of politics, economy and socialism connecting to the roots of India, by giving the mantra -- 'Reinventing India' through the principle of integral humanism and uplifting the weakest section of the society."

The Union Minister also met Ananta Rai, the self-proclaimed king and heir of Koch-Rajbongshi, in Bongaigaon.

Amit Shah will flag off BJP's fourth 'Poribortan Yatra' from West Bengal's Cooch Behar after meeting Anant Rai, who heads a faction of the Greater Cooch Behar Peoples' Association (GCPA) in Chirang district in lower Assam.

The Home Minister tweeted that he will be in West Bengal tomorrow, where he will interact with BJP's social media volunteers in Kolkata.

According to the schedule released by the Home Minister's Office, Amit Shah will also visit Sri Sri Harichand Thakur temple in West Bengal's Thakurnagar. He will also take part in a rally at Thakurnagar.

BJP has increased the political activity in the poll-bound states of Assam and West Bengal with senior leaders regularly visiting both the states. On February 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited both states and launched multiple development projects.

The Assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam are due to be held later this year.

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya was a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) member and former leader and president of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the precursor to BJP. He passed away on February 11, 1968, under mysterious circumstances. His body was found near Mughal Sarai junction which has been renamed as Deendayal Upadhyay junction.
