Amthisuwa festival celebrated with traditional fervour in Kokrajhar district

KOKRAJHAR: To take the traditional festival in rural areas forward, the Kanthalguri Village Society (KVS), a remote village of Kokrajhar district, organized football and kabaddi match and tug of war between the married and unmarried men and women to create sporting amusement among the rural masses in connection with the celebration of Amthisuwa (Ambuvasi) festival at Udangshri Club playground, Kanthalguri. The three-day sporting activities got underway from Tuesday.

Bodos celebrate the Amthisuwa festival every year beginning from the 7th day of Ashar month of the year. Fruits of different varieties are served to near and dear ones as well as neighbours. People get together and eat all kinds of fruits available in their homes and even share the fruits and all guests are offered fruits on that day.

The Kanthalguri Village Society (KVS) under Fakiragram police station of Kokrajhar district has been celebrating the Amthisuwa festival every year and accordingly, they organized a friendly football match and kabaddi game to create sporting amusement among the upcoming generations. The football match was held between married men and unmarried youths where the match ended in 4-4 draw. In the kabaddi match, Thengpakri group defeated Gambari group by 3-2 sets of points.

A tug of war competition was also held where married men beat the unmarried men with 2-0 set of points. All the winning teams were given away prize money. Later, they sat for community dining.
