An innovation to fight against threats of COVID-19

LAKHIMPUR: It is said that “Necessity is the mother of invention”. The immense number of scientific inventions of the world throughout the years and the lofty progress of science and technology have been possible only because of the perpetual feeling for the fulfillment of human need and necessity since the time immemorial.

Feeling such a necessity at a time when the whole world is haunted by COVID-19 menace, a student of Lakhimpur district has made out a sample of such an instrument which is expected to be useful while adopting the precautionary measures to fight against the threats of the pandemic. This instrument is nothing but an automatic hand wash machine which is innovated by Prasiddha Krishna Gogoi (15), a student of Class X in Tintiya Ahataguri High School, located at Mermukh under Narayanpur Education Block of the district. He is the only son of scribe cum poet-litterateur Jagat Gogoi and Kabita Gogoi, permanent residents of Jalbhoriya village under Mermukh area of Narayanpur.

The significance of the hand wash machine is that water automatically comes out from the container as soon as anyone stretches his hands near the pipe which is equipped in the machine with a special technique. With this water, any person can wash his hands without touching the machine.

Regarding the techniques of the machine, Prashiddha Krishna Gogoi informed The Sentinel that he had equipped the pipe with a relay board, infrared censor and a motor.

“As soon as any one forwards his hand towards the pipe, the relay board controls the infrared censor and water motor placed inside the machine which pushes the water of the container to come out. In addition to these instruments, some other instruments like Arduino UNO, 9 volt battery, wires and a brief board are also used in the machine,” he stated.

He further added that all these items used in the machine were left abandoned because of their non-usefulness. Moreover, he has prepared the gums and pipes used in the machine himself as the commercial institutions have remained closed to buy them from there due to the ongoing lockdown.

Regarding the innovation, he stated that he was much benefitted by the newly established science laboratory of his school. The headmaster of the school Ramen Duwara and other teachers have also inspired him to go on with his innovative thoughts.
