Another factory-made rifle found in BTAD ahead of elections

Guwahati: One more factory-made rifle has been recovered in the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) region of Assam ahead of the impending Council elections – this time in the Chirang district of Assam.

GP Singh, the Assam ADGP (Law and Order), wrote in a tweet, "Today, 19.07.2020, at Mwinaguri No. 4 village under Bijni Police Station Chirang Police recovered one factory-made (HK series) rifle along with one magazine and 10 rounds live ammunition. Another success to Assam Police against unlawful weapons in BTAD."

"We got information from a source about the location of this weapon in the Bijni area yesterday; consequently, a team of Chirang Police reached the spot and were able to scout out the rifle", Sudhakar Singh, the SP of Chirang, told The Sentinel Digital.

"In the district of Chirang, the NDFB insurgents have a major presence. Thus, we believe that the weapon was hidden away by some cadres of the militant outfit. Even though they have announced that they have disbanded in a press meet before the elections that were scheduled, the official process is still in the pipeline.

Similarly, a cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from Tipkai forest area of the Kokrajhar district of Assam on Friday by the Kokrajhar Police. Following specific information received, a team of police officers set out for an operation in the forest areas of Tipkai falling under the Bagribari police station in Kokrajhar district. "Among the weapons recovered were one AK-series rifle, two AK series magazines, one polythene sheet used for wrapping and covering the rifle and magazine to which lubricant was applied and 30 of AK series ammunition in a plastic container half-filled with rice husk," said Rakesh Roushan, SP of Kokrajhar. In a similar incident, Baksa Police also recovered three AK-Series rifles and two pistols in BTAD on Saturday.
