Army joins campaign to make Dhubri town clean, plastic free
Dhubri, Sept 1: Vigorous awareness campaign has been started by various social groups and NGOs. The unit of 17 Dogra of Red Horns Division based in Dhubri has also joined hands to make Dhubri town clean and completely plastic free. Awareness campaign was carried through recorded appeal to keep the district clean and to make it plastic free as this has led to clogging of drains and main water outlets and channels in the town, thereby causing water logging in all the wards.
The district Deputy Commissioner Anant Lal Gyani, finding no other way out, had imposed ban on the single-use plastic items by promulgating 144 CrPC last week. On Saturday, a rally led by Army jawans was taken out in the town with the slogan ‘Clean Dhubri Green Dhubri’. Besides Army jawans of 17 Dogra of Red Horns Division, a large number of members and volunteers of Lions Club of Dhubri, Leo Club of Dhubri, Biswa Nabin Bharat Sangha, Dhubri District Nehru Yuva Kendra, Team HUMANITY and local people took part in the rally.
Apart from banning single-use plastic items, the district administration has also geared up for eviction drive against the vendors doing business on both sides of the roads in Station Road, NS Road, market area in ward no 5, Mission Road and other places of the town. Altogether 250 vendors were evicted while 150 makeshifts were dismantled, an official source said.
When contacted, the district Extra Assistant Commissioner SK Chhetri informed that in their two-day drive, they collected Rs 7,000 fine from the shops in front of which plastic items and garbage were found to be scattered.
An official source also informed that they were contemplating to go all out to seize the stock of single-use plastic items soon.
People were reportedly saying that the district administration seemed to be pro-active only due to the imminent visit of Assam Governor Jagadish Mukhi, but a high official of the district administration informed this scribe that although the Governor would be visiting next week, the action of the district administration would continue till things fell into order.
