Dibrugarh: A colourful cultural event was held at District Library on Monday on the occasion of the birthday of famed artiste Parbati Prasad Baruah.

The programme revolved around performances based on the songs and dance composed by Baruah. Organized by Dibrugarh District Committee of Indian Gananatya Sangha, the event saw the general secretary of Assam State Committee of Indian Gananatya Sangha, Bipul Talukdar lighting the lamp. Inaugurating the event, State executive president of the Sangha, Sarat Chandra Neog spoke highly of the contributions of Baruah and underscored few distinctive features of his compositions – use of an indigenous tune of Assam being one.

President of the district committee of the Sangha, Arifa Begum welcomed everyone to the event, followed by the artistes of the Sangha performing one of the songs composed by Baruah. The main attraction of the event was the dance performance of Mira Kalita, a 74-year-old noted dancer artiste, based on the songs composed by Baruah. Some of the important programmes included poem recitation by Nilav Ranjan Bordoloi and Satyasikha Dowarah, dance performance by the students of Amolapatty Girls’ Primary School and dance performance by kids.
