LAKHIMPUR: As a part of the continuous agitation programmes initiated by the Lakhimpur district unit of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad (AJYP) from November 28, titled as "Ranadhwani", against the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) set up by NHPC Limited at Gerukamukh in the Assam-Arunachal border area under Dhemaji district, the organization conducted a yagya on Saturday as a mark off protest against the SLHP supporters and the persons involved with it.

By initiating the programme on the bank of the Somdiri River near Khelmati Police Outpost in North Lakhimpur town, the activists of the organization prayed for the awakening of the conscience of the Union and State governments to close the big river dam project which is considered as a tremendous threat to the life and property of the Subansiri riverine people under Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Majuli districts. The programme was conducted amidst the blended notes of Sanskrit mantras chanted by priests following the Vedic tradition and sounds of daba, sankha (conch) and borkah.

The activists of the organization, led by Lakhimpur district unit president Lulu Baruah and general secretary Sudipta Hazarika, shouted slogans against SLHP, NHPC, State and Union governments, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The protesters also displayed placards containing anti-big river dam slogans in the programme.
