Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad demands ban on selling fish with formalin

NAGAON: The district body of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has expressed its resentment today here for no lawful action taken against the fish traders who are involved in selling fish with formalin in the local markets across the district.

While addressing a press conference at the district office of the youth organization here at Nagaon Natun Bazar Chariali, the president and secretary of the organization, Pragjyotish Bonia and Debashish Das respectively, strongly criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the State Fisheries Minister Parimal Suklabaidya for remaining silent on the entire issue.

The organization asserted that in a recent study initiated by the food security department, Government of Assam, Biology, Chemistry and Physics Departments of Gauhati University and Raha Fisheries College, formalin was found in fishes imported to local fish markets from outside the State. But the Chief Minister as well as the State Fisheries Minister Parimal Suklabaidya are yet to take adequate measures against the selling of such formalin-treated fishes in the local markets here, they said.

Pointing out a bigger syndicate in trading of imported fish in local fish markets here, the leadership of the organization urged the State Government to ban the selling of fish mixed with formalin and to take strict action against the syndicate in fish markets across the district, failing which the organization would carry out massive democratic movement against the government as well as the department concerned in the days to come. Besides, during the press conference, the leadership of the organization also appealed to the people of the district not to purchase fish imported from outside the State.

Central executive Diganta Das, joint secretary Dibyajyoti Hazarika, publicity secretary Chandan Phukon, finance secretary Dipankar Sarma were also present in the press conference.
