LAKHIMPUR: As a part of the serial agitation programmes against the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Project (LSHEP) set up by the NHPC Limited at Gerukamukh in the Dhemaji-Arunachal border area, the Lakhimpur district unit of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) staged a two-hour long sit-in in front of the Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner’s office on Monday.

The anti-big dam organizations in Lakhimpur, including All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and AJYCP, came on to the streets against big river dams again in the wake of the National Green Tribunal’s verdict a few days ago in favour of the LSHEP. Following the verdict, the activists of the AJYCP blocked the NH-15 between Pahumara and Ranganadi River bridge on August 3 strongly opposing the construction of the controversial river dam and demanded the stop of the river dam. As per the declaration of the series of protest programmes on that day, the organization staged sit-in on Monday reiterating its demand to close the construction of the river dam forever.

Staging the protest, the activists repeated their vow to fight against the river dam till their last drop of blood. The leaders of the organization reiterated that they would never approve of the moves of the NHPC Limited, State Government and Union Government in order to complete the construction of the LSHEP by ignoring the sentiments of the people of the State and security issues of the Subansiri riverine people. Regarding the issue, AJYCP State committee assistant secretary Saurabh Das, Lakhimpur district president Mondeep Neog and general secretary Jyoti Das came down heavily against the Union and State governments and NHPC Limited during the protest.

The organization submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding stop in construction of the big river dam.

The organization will initiate a 100-hour-long programme to prevent the transportation of project construction materials from August 10 and form a human chain on August 20 at Gogamukh as mark of protest against the river dam.
