Bongaigaon: The much-anticipated Asomi Bhogali Mela 2025 was inaugurated on Thursday at the Borpara Public Playground by Diptimayee Choudhury, MLA of 32-Bongaigaon LAC . Organized annually by the Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission (ASRLM) under the Department of Panchayat & Rural Development, Government of Assam, the Mela is being held from the January 9 to 11, as part of the Bhogali Bihu celebrations.
The event is spearheaded by the District Mission Management Unit (DMMU), ASRLM of Bongaigaon with the aim of providing a market place for Self-Help Group (SHG) members to showcase and sell their locally produced items.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, the MLA highlighted the importance of empowering village women by providing them with opportunities to market their products. She noted, “Village women are skilled in producing a variety of homemade products, especially during Bhogali Bihu, but they often lack access to a profitable market. The Asomi Bhogali Mela, organized under ASRLM, will bridge this gap and uplift the village economy by connecting rural producers directly with buyers.”
The Mela features 30 sale points from 5 developmental blocks of the district offering a wide range of items, including traditional festive delicacies such as pitha-ladu, seasonal rice-based items, and other food products, handcrafted traditional clothes and dresses, etc.
By bringing this vibrant marketplace to the town, the event ensures that urban buyers have access to fresh, quality products directly from the villages while supporting rural livelihoods. This initiative not only benefits the SHG members but also contributes significantly to the local economy.
The Asomi Bhogali Mela has grown into a cherished tradition that celebrates the spirit of Bhogali Bihu while promoting rural entrepreneurship. Visitors are encouraged to explore the diverse offerings and support local producers, making this festive season even more meaningful.
