ASPWU Protests Against ‘High-handedness’ of APDCL Managing Director

A Correspondent

Dibrugarh: Hundreds of members of Assam State Power Workers’ Union (ASPWU) performed a sit-in in front of the office of the CEO of the Dibrugarh Power Circle of Assam Power Distribution Company (APDCL) recently against the alleged irresponsibility and high-handedness of the Managing Director of Assam Power Distribution Company.

The members belonged to Tingkhang, Bordubi, Naharkatia and Dibrugarh branches. Taking part in the sit-in, central executive president of ASPWU, Leela Changmai; vice-president Sukhen Gogoi and central organizational secretary, Kanak Das said that at a time when the power distribution company was failing to deliver electricity of a higher standard to the public and workers were dying of electrocution, the MD was involved in reaping off private gains. The MD was also accused of promoting corruption and graft in APDCL, as well as depriving the employees of their dues.

In a press communiqué, it was mentioned that although the MD had agreed for a bilateral meeting with the representatives of the ASPWU on September 27, the representatives were forced to return as a result of the inordinate and seemingly deliberate delay caused in starting the meeting. Such a cold response compelled the members of the union to resort to such forms of agitation, the release further mentioned. The members of the union have demanded that the MD be soon removed from his position. Otherwise, the Central Working Committee of the Union would step up its protests in the coming days.
