Guwahati: A local court in Assam's Chirang district has awarded life imprisonment to 10 persons in connection with a 21 years old witch-hunting case.

The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Bijni in Chirang district delivered the verdict on Tuesday.

Reportedly, in 2001, the 12 accused persons had allegedly killed three persons on suspicion of practicing withcraft which were identified as Ganguly Basumtari, Malaram Basumtari, and Paniram Basumtari.

However, out of 12 accused, two died earlier.

According to reports, when the said case was registered at Bijni police station, at that time Bijni court was under the Bongaigaon district and the case was transferred here in 2018.

Since then the hearings and witnesses process was going on and today the court has delivered the final verdict.

However, in a bid to provide more effective measures to prohibit stop such cases from happening in the future, the Assam government in the year 2015 introduced the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention, and Protection) Act, 2015 and which was later in 2018 received the assent of President Ram Nath Kovind and since then it has been in effect.
