Assam: 12th death anniversary of Chanakya Brahma observed in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR: The Bodoland Indigenous Games Association (BIGA) on Tuesday observed the 12th death anniversary of its founder of the association late Chanakya Brahma at his burial place at Adabari near Kokrajhar town. The day was also observed in other districts of BTC.

As part of the programme, the vice president of BIGA hoisted the organizational flag in the morning while Roni Bala Brahma, wife of late Chanakya Brahma paid the floral tribute. Former DIPRO, Kokrajhar T. Boro and Gaonbura of Adabari village Ratneswar Brahma started the plantation of decorative plants inside the burial compound. Local citizens, activists of BIGA and well wishers also paid floral tribute to late Chanakya Brahma.

Talking to reporters, the general secretary of BIGA Guno Shankar Wary said the association had been working for the preservation and revival of traditional sports of the Bodo. He said late Brahma founded the BIGA to preserve and revitalize the indigenous games of the Bodos. Late Brahma decided to preserve and promote traditional sports and carried out research on indigenous games for at least twenty years, he said adding that the BIGA will try to fulfil the aspirations and dreams of late Chanakya Brahma.

Wary said traditional Bodo Khomlainai had attained importance in the international arena and it is recognized under SAI Indigenous Martial Atrs status and has training centre of Khomlainai at SAI-Kokrajhar since 2014 where an official coach had been engaged to run the training centre but most ironically, the Khomlainai training centre is going to be removed from Kokrajhar SAI due to apathy of a section of official in SAI, NEC, Guwahati. He said the BIGA had pursued the SAI, NEC for continuation of Khomlainai at SAI-Kokrajhar for the greater interest of preservation of indigenous sports. He also said establishment of Chanakya Brahma Memorial Institution of Indigenous Games and Research Centre in Kokrajhar was one of the major aims of the BIGA.
