Assam: 13 Schools File Petition In High Court Against Fee Structure

Guwahati: At least thirteen schools in the state have filed petition against the fee structure of the state government in the High Court, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu informed the Assembly.

He also informed the state Assembly on Thursday that apart from these 13 schools, seven schools have also applied for review of the fee structure.

Several schools are now knocking the door of the High Court as earlier; the education department of Assam had set of fee structure for all non-government educational institutions.

On the other hand, for the students of class 11 and 12, the fee has been fixed at Rs 37,000 (Science stream) and Rs 33,000 (Commerce streams).

According to Educational Institutions (Regulation of Fees) Act, 2018 passed by the Assam Legislative assembly in 2018, schools were asked not charge more than Rs 27,000 for pre-primary and class 1 to 5 students while Rs 32,000 for class 6 to 10 students.

Except, the transportation fee, the fee structure included all types of charges such as admission fees, tuition fees, building or infrastructure development fee, sports/cultural fee etc.

Meanwhile, reportedly, a total of 2,250 schools sought a certificate of exemption from fee-cuts by the panel for the session 2022-2023 from the fee regulatory committee of the state government.
