Assam: 14 Gold Bars Weighing 2.323 Kg Gold Seized State's Karbi Anglong, Two Held

Both Assam Police and CRPF, carried our a joint operation and set up a Naka checking, based on specific inputs at the Laharijan area in Karbi Anglong district.

Karbi Anglong: The Assam Police along with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) apprehended three persons and seized 2.323 kg of gold from a passenger bus in Karbi Anglong district on Saturday night.

As per reports, both Assam Police and CRPF, carried our a joint operation and set up a Naka checking, based on specific inputs at the Laharijan area in Karbi Anglong district and seized the gold.

"During checking, the security personnel recovered 14 gold bars weighing 2.323 kg from the night super bus. We arrested three persons in connection with this," ANI quoted John Das, SDPO of Bokajan Sub-Division as saying.

The arrested persons have been identified as 24-years-old Md Mohim and 41-years-old Md Masharudin, both hail from the Thiubal district of Manipur.

Notably, the bus was coming from Manipur and was going towards Guwahati.

In last month August, the Government Railway Police (GRP) had also seized 1.92 kg of gold from a passenger travelling on the Rajdhani Express at Guwahati Railway Station.

As per reports, the gold was molded in a boat shape and the arrested person has been identified as Akash Kumar, a resident of Bihar.

Kumar had boarded the Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express from Dimapur.

Notably, on 16 July, the GRP seized about 822 grams of gold bars from the Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express at the Guwahati Railway Station.

In this connection, police also apprehended a Delhi-based youth in connection with the incident who was identified as Vishal Sukhdeo Dabade.

As per GRP, it was suspected that the gold bars are from Myanmar.

In May this year, sleuths of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Thursday seized 15.93 kg of smuggled foreign-origin gold, valued at around Rs 8.38 crore, from three separate vehicles which were intercepted simultaneously at a different location on the National Highway Dimapur and Guwahati.

Five members of the smuggling ring were arrested and two oil tankers and a truck were seized during the DRI operation, which was codenamed 'Gold on the Highway'.

DRI sources said that the gold was smuggled through the Indo-Myanmar border. They added that operation 'Gold on the Highway' was launched on the basis of specific intelligence. The three vehicles were under surveillance from the moment they left Mao in Manipur for Guwahati via Dimapur in Nagaland.

The seized gold was in the form of 96 biscuits that had been carefully concealed in various parts of the oil tankers and the truck.

The DRI sources further informed that the DRI had seized over 208 kg of contraband gold, valued at Rs 102.6 crore, in the Northeastern States during the 2021-2022 fiscal year.
