GUWAHATI: Assam Police detained 16 individuals on Monday for unauthorised crossing of the India-Bangladesh border, including 7 men, 4 women, and 5 children.
It was alleged that they travelled from Bangalore via Guwahati to Manakachar in South Salmara. The arrested individuals admitted to being Bangladeshi citizens after being interrogated by police.
On his X account, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, "In an excellent op carried out by @SalmaraPolice, 16 illegal Bangladeshis (7 Male, 4 Female & 5 children) who travelled from Bengaluru to Guwahati Railway Station and moved towards South Salmara Mankachar district were apprehended and upon investigation their nationality as Bangladeshis were confirmed. These people are being pushed back across the border."
The arrested individuals were identified as Md. Mehdi Hasan, Chand Mia, Rumana Aktar, Md. Rizwan Hawaldar, Jamal Sk, Beauty Begum, Munni Begum, Nushrat Zahan, Rustom Sk, Rubel Qureshi, and five children.
In order to deport the suspects back to Bangladesh, the authorities have started the process.
Last week, Assam Police arrested a Bangladeshi national for unauthorised entry across the India-Bangladesh border. The infiltrator identified as Asma Akther was compelled to return to Bangladesh after getting caught near the international border.
Prior to that, the Assam Chief Minister had declared that six infiltrators, including two Bangladeshi women, had been apprehended by Assam police and handed over to authorities in the adjoining country earlier this month.
