Assam: 19-year-old dies due to COVID-19 in Jorhat, 6 deaths in a day

Guwahati: Yet another person in Assam -- this time a teen -- has succumbed to death after being infected with the dreaded COVID-19 virus in Jorhat Medical College on Wednesday, June 7. With this, the number of COVID-19 related casualties in the state has risen to 22.

"Sorry to inform that we lost a very young Monika Bhumij (19) to COVID-19. She had severe anemia and sepsis and was in the ICU of Jorhat Medical College after she was referred from Sivasagar. Doctors did their best but unfortunately, we couldn't save her. Heartfelt condolences", Assam health and family welfare minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote in a tweet.

Earlier in the day, five more persons in the state have died due to complications from the COVID-19 virus. Four patients passed away at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in the wee hours of the morning today.

The deceased have been identified as Safikul Rahman (60) of Hidayatpur in Guwahati, Romoni Mazumdar (60) of Patacharkuchi, Utpal Kumar Chaliha (75) of Khahilipara in Dispur, and Hari Prasad Mandal (68) of Lalganesh in Guwahati. They were admitted to the Covid Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and succumbed to their critical infections earlier in the morning today -- between 2 am and 5 am. "They all were on invasive ventilation, had severe pneumonia, urosepsis, and septic shock", Biswa Sarma informed.

"Condolences. Sad to inform that Jitendra Prasad (30) from Majbat, Udalguri admitted on July 7 at Tezpur Medical College, with features of Septicaemia in shock with history of herbal medication, became a victim of COVID-19. So sad to see young lives being lost", Sarma wrote in a subsequent tweet.

On Tuesday, as many as 814 new COVID-19 cases were detected in Assam, with 588 of those being from Guwahati City. On the same day, two people in the state also passed away from virus-related complications. However, the number of casualties on Wednesday have even surpassed Tuesday's numbers.
