Assam: 2 more arrested in Debashish Gogoi lynching incident

Guwahati:The police have arrested two more people in the past two days in connection with the Debashish Gogoi lynching incident near Mariani in Jorhat District.

So far, 16 persons have been arrested in connection with the lynching incident.

After arresting 10 people within five days of the incident that took place on May 29, another 6 persons have been arrested in the past one week including the two men in the last two days, a police official stated.

As per the orders of the Sub-divisional Judicial Court, the accused persons were in Judicial custody.

The officials said that many people have been picked up for interrogation linked with the case and released after 12 days.

The incident took place on May 29 when a 23-year-old man was brutally killed by workers of Parbatpur tea estate. Debashish Gogoi along with his friend Aditya Das went sightseeing in a tourist spot to Parbatpur hill. On their way back they bumped two women as their two-wheeler skidded. Seeing this, a crowd gathered assailed the duo.

During the inquiry, Additional Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Phukan has recorded the statements given by the victim's father and elder sister, members of the public and the police officials.
