GUWAHATI: On July 6, senior BJP leaders from 12 northeastern and eastern Indian states gathered in Guwahati to plan for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

BL Santosh, the national general secretary of the BJP, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, chief ministers of Assam and Tripura, as well as party MPs and MLAs, were present at the meeting.

According to Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, the party's core committee met earlier on July 5 to discuss the topics that will be covered at the daylong Zonal Committee meeting.

He added that a thorough discussion of the 'Maha Jana Sampark Abhiyan', a month-long event staged in June to commemorate the end of the Narendra Modi administration's nine-year term, was also held during the meeting.

There are 25 Lok Sabha seats available among the eight northeastern states, with Assam having the most with 14. Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya each have two seats, while Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim each have one.

West Bengal has 42 seats, Bihar has 40 seats, Odisha has 21 seats, and Jharkhand has 14 seats among the eastern states.

In the meantime, the BJP drafted a plan at its Guwahati conference for the general elections in 2024, which are less than a year away, in the presence of a phalanx of leaders. The state representatives provided a thorough explanation of the party's position in their various states during the meeting. The party's focus was Odisha, there was a particular discussion about the state at the gathering.

Manmohan Samal, the president of the Odisha BJP, Manas Mohanty, the general secretary of the state organisation, and Vijaypal Singh Tomar, the co-in charge of Odisha, had a brief conversation about the party's position in the state. The topic of conversation was increasing the number of seats in the state.

On the other hand, the BJP meeting was also attended by the Sikkim State Incharge Dr. Dilip Jaiswal, State President DR Thapa, Vice President Arjun Rai, and General Secretary Bharat Dulal.
