Assam: 3 MLAs Suspended For Ruckus Over Rahul Gandhi’s Disqualification

GUWAHATI: On Wednesday, there was a commotion in the Assam Assembly as a result of the Congress' introduction of an adjournment motion to discuss Rahul Gandhi's exclusion from the Lok Sabha as a result of a court decision.

Two House adjournments and the temporary suspension of two Congress MLAs and one Independent legislator was announced by Speaker Biswajit Daimary.

As soon as the Question Period was finished, Daimary gave the opposition leader, Debabrata Saikia, the opportunity to raise the notice and inquire about the motion's admissibility. "In order to ask the Indian President to uphold the Constitution, we wish to send her a resolution. The Constitution is the same for everyone, and to uphold it, the administration must act equitably," the leader of Congress remarked.

He emphasised that Gandhi's disqualification violated the Constitution by citing numerous Constitutional laws in regard to the dismissal of a member of Congress.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister, responded to the motion by saying, "We've never expressed our opinions on a court topic before. I am aware that it was decided to make noise here at the Congress Legislative Party last night.”

As a result, all of the opposition's lawmakers from the AIUDF, CPI(M), and Independent moved to the House in a raucous scene. They held up signs and shouted chants in support of Rahul Gandhi. The BJP members also rushed to the well and yelled anti-Gandhi chants. The Speaker then permitted the various standing committee reports to be tabled before moving on to the next House issue. Daimary then called a 15-minute adjournment of the House.

As soon as the House was back in session, Sarma rose to respond, but all of the opposition members protested, claiming "the matter was over."

The Congress MLAs and Independent member Akhil Gogoi again moved to the well while holding banners, while the chief minister insisted on responding. Gogoi and the others were repeatedly told by Daimary to return to their seats, but no one complied.

He then removed Gogoi and Congress MLAs Jakir Hussain Sikdar and Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha from the House for the remainder of the day. The three lawmakers were removed from the House by the marshals.

“I propose to dismiss Akhil Gogoi and Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha for the duration of this session, which runs through April 5, Sarma stated. On that day, the Assam Assembly's budget session is supposed to come to a close. The Speaker then adjourned the House for 20 minutes again, the second time in a day, over the issue.
