Assam: 31 Dogs Found Tied Up And Left By The Roadside In Bokakhat

GUWAHATI: Bokakhat police on Friday found 31 dogs abandoned by the roadside in Kuruwabahi near Bokakhat and seized them.

The dogs reportedly belong to the domestic breed of dogs usually found on the streets across the state. The dogs have been seized from the roadside inside sacks, with their legs and mouths tied and only the heads sticking out.

Police registered a case against unknown persons and an investigation has been launched. Bokakhat police is also searching for eyewitnesses to the incident.

It is suspected that dog smugglers were taking the dogs to Nagaland when something happened, leading to their abandoning the dogs by the wayside.

However, the police are now in dilemma as to how and where they should be kept. The police are yet to ascertain from where the dogs have been brought and who were behind the smuggling.

It is worth noting that killing dogs and eating them are illegal according to the laws of India but it is still being done, sometimes openly, in Nagaland and few other Northeastern states. In Nagaland, dog meat is considered to have high nutritional and medicinal value and Naga people pay a high price for the animals, as they have disappeared in their state, sources informed.

Dog smuggling is rampant in Assam and smugglers gather truckloads of stray by enticing them with food and then grabbing and tying them up for transportation into Nagaland for big profit, right under the noses of the police at the border checkpoints between Assam and its neighboring state, those in the know about such surreptitious activities said.

There have also been several incidents reported about Naga youths living in metro cities being beaten up or even lynched for suspicion of stealing and eating dogs, sometimes even pets.
