SILCHAR: At least four persons have lost their lives while more than 20 others fell sick after drinking contaminated water at Bhakatpur, Kathal Road, Silchar. The outbreak, which has been going on for the past week, is believed to have been caused by harmful substances in the water supplied under the Bhakatpur Water Project, a scheme launched by the government as a part of its Jal Jeevan Mission.
A sudden wave of illness was reported in Sector 4, Bhakatpur, where the disease started with two people. The disease spread fast and affected almost every household in the area. More than 24 patients were admitted to Silchar Medical College and Civil Hospital, and many are still undergoing treatment.
It took a turn for the worse when on 22 December two residents lost their lives: 40-year-old Shankar Dutta and 35-year-old Sharif Uddin. Two other elderly residents also died three days later - 65-year-old Putul Mia and 60-year-old Saidur Barbhuiya.
The water supplied by the Bhakatpur Water Project is the source of the contamination, according to local complaints. Water samples from the project and other nearby sources have been gathered by the authorities and sent to labs for analysis. The health department is keeping a careful eye on the situation, and a medical camp has been organized. Investigations into the cause and full amount of contamination are still ongoing.
