DULIAJAN: Assam Police on Friday apprehended four individuals posing as members of the banned militant group ULFA(I) in an operation in the Duliajan area of Dibrugarh district. The arrested suspects were identified as Bitupon Gogoi, alias Jayanta Asom, Bharat Hazari, Bolin Gogoi, and Binod Pahari.

According to Dibrugarh ASP (HQ) Nirmal Ghosh, these individuals had been using the ULFA(I) name to extort money from local businessmen. The group had issued extortion notes to three businessmen in Duliajan. A case was registered under case number 2/25 at the Duliajan police station, which led to the successful capture of the suspects.

During the operation, the criminals were found possessing several items. These included a 7.65 pistol, a live round of ammunition, 11 mobile handsets, 18 SIM cards, one improvised explosive device (IED), a battery, and Rs 49,500 in cash. It is said that the suspects had planned to explode the IED during Republic Day celebrations in Duliajan.

The arrested persons were trying to misuse the name of ULFA(I) for their nefarious activities, though the police made it clear that they were not members of the militant outfit. The accused persons are notorious criminals with cases against them across Assam. Investigations are still going on.

This action by the authorities in the arrest of suspects and the confiscation of explosives is evidence of proactive law enforcement effectiveness in preventing threats to public safety when major events occur.
