Assam: 4 prison inmates, including rape accused, escape from Lakhimpur district jail

Lakhimpur: In a sensational incident reported from Assam's Lakhimpur, as many as 4 inmates of the district jail managed to flee on Friday night. Police's attempts to locate the runaways have so far been unsuccessful and search operations are on.

The escaped convicts have been identified as Rahul Deori, Papu Das, Loknath Pegu, and Pranab Baniya. One of the escapees -- Loknath Pegu -- had reportedly been jailed after being accused of the heinous crime of rape. The other three -- Rahul Daimary, Pranab Das, and Papu Bania -- have been accused of stealing motorbikes.

The escape of these convicts has fomented fear in the people's minds, as they are believed to be armed and dangerous. Moreover, the escape of a rape accused at a time when national discussions have once again veered towards the topic in view of the shocking gangrape incident in UP's Hathras has put Lakhimpur residents on edge.

According to reports, the jail authorities raised the alarm in the wee hours of Saturday after they discovered that the prisoners had escaped. Although the police have begun an operation to locate the inmates, they have been unsuccessful so far.
