GUWAHATI : Assam state government has recently  launched a 15 day drive against child marriage in the region. Several cases has been registered ever since the launch of the operation from varied areas. 

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently showcased a data which illustrates 4004 cases of child marriage registered in the state. The CM released the information through his Twitter handle and assured total eradication of this particular social evil. 

"Assam government is firm in its resolve to end the menace of child marriage in the state. So far @assampolice has registered 4,004 cases across the state and more police action is likely in days ahead. Action on the cases will begin starting February 3. I request all to cooperate", Sarma tweeted. 

The data demonstrates that maximum number of cases has been recorded from Dhubri district, with 370 episodes, second comes Hojai, which has registered 255 cases and Udalguri with 235 cases. Notably, Assam's Dima Hasao region has marked the lowest incidents of child marriage cases. 

The social evil continues to influence certain parts of Assam as well as India, despite prohibition laws and regulations. An episode occurred in Rupahihat area of central Assam district, where three individuals got nabbed for getting involved in child marriage. 

As per the police, on 28th of January, Saturday, the department received information regarding a minor girl who was being married off at a village called Dakhin Khatowal. Following the information, an operation was initiated by a team of police headed by Sanjit Kumar Dey, the officer in charge of Rupahihat police unit. 

They raided the house Abdul Kalam, where the marriage was organised. Three persons involved in the process were apprehended during the raid. According to sources, the girl child was rescued by the team. The arrested people has been identified as Obaidul Islam, Gulzar Hussain, who is a resident of Dakhin Khatowal and Rufol Amin who hails from Maaripar village of Assam. 

A case has been filed against the matter at Rupahihat police department under IPC section 9,10,11 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 and IPC section 12 of POSCO Act of 2012.
