MORIGAON: In the early hours of Thursday, a 5.0 magnitude earthquake rattled the Morigaon district of Assam, with tremors felt as far as Guwahati and other regions of the state. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) confirmed that the quake occurred at 2:25 a.m. at a depth of 16 kilometers.

The NCS gave a detailed report of the seismic activity, which read, "EQ of M: 5.0, On: 27/02/2025 02:25:40 IST, Lat: 26.28 N, Long: 92.24 E, Depth: 16 Km, Location: Morigaon, Assam." Assam is prone to earthquakes and is located in Seismic Zone V, which is a high-risk zone for major seismic activity. Traditionally, the area has had large-scale earthquakes, such as the 1950 Assam-Tibet earthquake of magnitude 8.6, and the 1897 Shillong earthquake, measured at 8.1.

This seismic event follows closely on the heels of a 5.1 magnitude earthquake that struck the Bay of Bengal on February 25, with tremors felt in Kolkata and various parts of West Bengal. The NCS reported that the quake occurred at 6:10 a.m. at a depth of 91 kilometers, near Puri in Odisha. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties from either earthquake, although the tremors caused brief panic among residents.
