GUWAHATI: Guwahati police commissionerate on 3rd February, Friday, revealed that 53 individuals has been detained till date during the drive against child marriage in Assam. 

Apart from this, 192 cases against child marriage has been recorded in varied police departments across the state, informed a senior police officer. The drive was initiated on 2nd of February, Thursday, following the order of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. 

As per the sources, Assam police nabbed two accused from Morigaon district's Moirabari area. Police arrested the duo on Thursday night as they were married to girls who has still not attended the age of 18. 

Along with this, six individuals got apprehended from Majuli in connection with same matter. In Dhubri, as many as 96 people got nabbed by the police for getting involved in the activities of child marriage.

On 2nd of February, Thursday, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma held a video conference with all district Superintendents, and various senior police officials. The video meeting revolved around discussion regarding actions against the ongoing child marriage practices in Assam.

The Chief Minister also urged all the citizens to cooperate with the administration to eradicate the social evil.

The CM tweeted regarding same on Friday morning. ''Chaired a VC of SPs in presence of GP Singh regarding state-wide police action to be launched from tomorrow against child marriage and reviewed the arrangements. I appeal to people to extend support and cooperate with us in our endeavour to rid the state of the evil practice.''

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently showcased a data which illustrates 4004 cases of child marriage registered in the state. The CM released the information through his Twitter handle and assured total eradication of this particular social evil.

"Assam government is firm in its resolve to end the menace of child marriage in the state. So far @assampolice has registered 4,004 cases across the state and more police action is likely in days ahead. Action on the cases will begin starting February 3. I request all to cooperate", Sarma tweeted.

The data demonstrates that maximum number of cases has been recorded from Dhubri district, with 370 episodes, second comes Hojai, which has registered 255 cases and Udalguri with 235 cases.
