DIBRUGARH: The 58th death anniversary of  Padmashri Hanumanbax Kanoi was observed at DHSK college, Dibrugarh on Saturday.

Speaking at the programme, former Vice chancellor of Dibrugarh University Dr Alok Kumar Buragohain elaborated on the topic ‘Higher Education in Assam: Past, Present and Future’. He said that the education system during the Ahom rule was not provided for earning a living but for acquiring knowledge and skills.  Dr Buragohain said the country’s economy is growing faster and future education must give priority to creating an industrial revolution.

He congratulated DHSK College on its recent autonomy and suggested that the college should become an industrial hub in the future.

Hanumanbax Kanoi Memorial award was presented to Assam cabinet minister and Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan.

After receiving the award, the minister thanked the Principal Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia and all the members of the Hanumanbax Kanoi family.

The Hanumanbax Kanoi family members Jyoti Prasad Kanoi, Nanda Kishore Kanoi, Rajeev Ratan Kanoi and others were felicitated by the college authority.

The family members of Hanumanbax Kanoi were emotional and moved to tears to witness the historic moment of remembering Hanumanbax Kanoi at such a solemn gathering at DHSK College for the first time, which has crossed 80 years. Jyoti Prasad Kanoi, Rajeev Ratan Kanoi spoke on behalf of the Hanumanbax Kanoi family and thanked everyone.

Prasanta Phukan inaugurated the statue of Surajmal Kanoi, one of the pioneers of the establishment of the DHSK College.

A book on Rai Saheb Kanoi, written by Suman Dutta and published by Jyoti Prasad Kanoi was  inaugurated by Prasanta Phukan during the programme.

The Jyoti Lalita Kanoi Foundation donated Rs 2 lakh each to four colleges in Dibrugarh namely DHSK College, MDKG College, DHSK Commerce College and DHSK Law College and signed an MoU.

The foundation also donated Rs. 12.50 lakh to DHSK College for the development of the college for naming the old girls hostel as Rukmini Devi Kanoi Girls’ Hostel.
