GUWAHATI: 6 artists from Assam have received the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, providing a significant boost to Assamese drama while 10 artists have received Sangeet Natak Academy Awards.

The esteemed Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for 2019 was given to Prabhat Kakoti. Jollymani Saikia (Sattriya), Manas Kumar Samoa (Violin), and Himanshu Sharma have won the prize for the year 2020. (drama direction). Deepjyoti Das and Dipankar Arandhara, two Sattriya dancers, have won the Bismillah Khan Award for 2021.

Accomplished playwright and director Avinash Sharma, sattriya guru Ranjumoni Saikia, famous Bihu artists , Prasana Gogoi, actor Pranjal Saikia, Gunindranath Oja, famous artists associated with the music and staging of Ankhya Baona, Satriya dancer Holi Bora Borbayan, eminent Oja artist Dharmesh Nath Ojagul Prasad Oja, eminent violinist Minati Kaund, prominent Assam folk music and dance artist Makan Chandra Bora received the Sangeet Natak Academy Award.

The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, awarded to performers under the age of 40, was created with the aim of identifying and supporting exceptional young performers in a variety of performing arts disciplines and granting them national recognition early in their lives so that they may work with greater commitment and dedication in their chosen fields.

The full spectrum of performing arts is covered by younger artists, including vocal music in both Hindustani and Carnatic traditions, instrumental music in both traditions, including flute, sitar, and mridangam, as well as other important musical traditions.

With 19 musicians from the North-east chosen for the Award from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura, the North-eastern States of the nation have also been fairly represented.

The purse money for the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar is Rs. 25,000. (Rupees twenty-five thousand only). The Chairman of Sangeet Natak Akademi will present the Yuva Puraskar during a special ceremony.
