BONGAIGAON: A 78-year-old inmate, Ishan Narzary, who was accused in a POCSO case, was found dead inside Abhayapuri Jail in Assam's Bongaigaon district on Sunday.

Narzary, a resident of Amguri in Chirang district, allegedly consumed a sharp object that proved fatal. The body was found by jail staff during routine inspection. The authorities immediately alerted the local police, who are now investigating the incident.

Preliminary reports say that Narzary had been detained for a long time and that might have driven him to commit suicide. The official reasons for committing the alleged suicide are still not known.

The investigation team has initiated an inquiry about how Narzary had access to the sharp weapon in the jail. In this process, the investigation team will also identify the loopholes in the security of the jail which may have facilitated the event.

Months ago in a separate incident, Tinsukia Special POCSO Court Judge Chitra Rani Saikia sentenced Mariyes Ekka to five years in prison and a fine of ₹10,000 under Section 10 of the POCSO Act for attempting to rape a minor girl, with an additional four-month sentence in case of non-payment.

The case, filed in 2023 at Margherita police station (Case No. 193/23), involved an FIR by the victim’s father alleging physical assault. Investigated by SI Biswajit Saharia, the trial (POCSO Case No. 121/23) included testimonies from eight witnesses and six pieces of evidence, leading to Ekka’s conviction, as confirmed by Government Advocate Banwari Lal Agarwal.

Narzary had been arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act charges. There are multiple questions arising out of this incident regarding the proper management and security procedure in such correction facilities. The more details are going to unfold as the inquiry progresses.
