Assam: 8 cybercriminals arrested in Tinsukia town

Tinsukia: After a month-long trail, Tinsukia police led by ASP Mrinmoy Das and OC Tinsukia Paragjyoti Buragohain made a significant breakthrough by busting a cybercrime racket following arrest of 8 persons including the mastermind and a woman from an under construction building in Tamulbari in Tinsukia town on Friday evening. Police recovered 136 ATM cards along with digital devices and bank instruments.

According to police source, these cyber criminals used to provide mule accounts to cybercriminals operating in different parts of the country and involved in online betting likely IPL having inter-state connections. The apprehended persons have been identified as Manoj Kumar alias Munna of Basgaondist Gorakhpur, the mastermind and presently residing in Tinsukia town, Nargis Bhanu, Irfan Ansari, Imam Hussain, Ram Singh all from Chattishgarh while Rahul Pathak, Harshit Choudhury and Om Prakash Prasad belong to Tinsukia. The police recovered 136 ATM cards, 20 SIMs, laptops, 17 cell phones, 68 bank accounts and 66 cheque books and pass books. The mastermind Manoj Kumar alias Munna a khalsi in an oil tanker till recently was operating from Tinsukia since past few months and used to lure college students to open accounts in different banks. Police, however, did not rule out the involvement of bank official in the modus operandi.
