Bongaigaon: Responding to the Assam government’s decision to provide arms licenses to indigenous people living in “vulnerable and remote areas” and those along the borders with Bangladesh, Rezaul Karim Sarkar, president of the All Minorities Students Union (AAMSU), said the state’s Home Department had completely failed to protect its people.
“This decision clearly shows how helpless and ineffective the Home Department of Assam has become,” Sarkar said.
He described the move as a “disgusting decision.” “We, the Assamese people — irrespective of being a minority or majority — are peace-loving. But this government, led by Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, seems determined to disrupt our peace with such decisions,” he added. “It is the government’s sole responsibility to protect its citizens. The Home Department, which is run by none other than the Chief Minister himself, is there for this very purpose. But, pathetically, we are witnessing a situation where, instead of providing pens for community development and promoting peace, the government is offering guns, provoking violence. By doing so, the government is essentially admitting its own failure.”
Sarkar urged the government to reconsider its decision. “If any area is sensitive, vulnerable, and the people there are suffering from insecurity, the number of police stations can be increased, or additional security forces can be deployed. But telling ordinary citizens that they should take responsibility for protecting their area undermines the need for such a department in our state. This is clearly a political move aimed at gaining political benefit by spreading hatred among common citizens,” he said.
