DOOMDOOMA: The local people, especially the students have raised concerns regarding the need for an RCC bridge in Dhola of Assam which was not completed even after several years of the allocation of the funds.

The local people mentioned that the funds for the construction of an RCC bridge in the Bandorkhal locality of Dhola over the Koliyapani River were allocated in the 2017-28 financial year itself, but to date, the work on the bridge has not been completed. The All Assam Students Union (AASU) staged a massive protest comprising a large number of schoolchildren demanding that the bridge be constructed immediately.

The protest was led by the Saikhowa unit of the student organisation. They mentioned that the lack of a proper bridge has been a major area of concern for the people of the region. They also threatened that if their demands were not met immediately, they would take up more severe protests. They also engaged in sloganeering against the local Member of Parliament and Member of Legislative Assembly during this protest.

It can be noted that an old wooden bridge is used by the students to travel between both banks of the river, but due to the devastated condition, vehicles are not allowed to ply on the same. Also this bridge is essential for the people of over 9 villages, which makes it an indispensable part of communication.

Previously, an accident on a temporary bridge led to the death of one person and the injury of another. The incident occurred in the Seleghat locality of Mariani on the night of Wednesday. An RCC bridge in the Tengabari area was damaged around five months back so the locals were forced to construct a bamboo bridge to ensure that people could continue to cross the river. But one night, a two-wheeler with two people onboard fell through the bridge into the ground below. The incident led to the immediate demise of one person while the other suffered severe injuries.
