DIBRUGARH: Assam Branch Indian Tea Association (ABITA) Zone 1 and the Tea Estates Management observed World Day for Safety and Health at Work on Monday at different tea estates of Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, and Charaideo Districts.
To commemorate the day, awareness generation programmes were organized in factories, community places, labour lines, etc. for the factory workers, plantation workers, health staff, adolescents, and community people. The programmes mainly focused on safety at the workplace for the factory and plantation workers and briefed the topics related to safety protocols and safety practices.
The workers were sensitized on use of PPE kit, tool safety, chemical handling, hydration and rest, first aid and emergency, etc. during the programme. This included fire prevention tips and dos & don’ts during fire and fire emergencies.
The awareness programme was also organized with the community people to prepare individuals and communities to safely and effectively respond during natural or man-made disasters. It included awareness on the importance of road safety and rules of road safety to be followed by the people. The adolescents and young generation were sensitized on cyber safety and different types of scams and shared internet safety rules to protect them from online banking fraud, online abuse, etc. and encouraged to promote respectful behaviours in online interactions. In 45 tea estates, the awareness programmes were organized where around 3200 workers (factory and plantation), including adolescents and community people participated. Madhurjya Barooah, Secretary ABITA Zone 1, expressed that celebration of World Safety and Health at Workplace in tea estates would generate awareness among the workers especially on safety protocols and safety practices at workplace.
