Assam: Accused Dies in Sivasagar After Trying to Flee from Police Custody

SIVASAGAR: An accused who was held by the Sivasagar Police on the charge of stealing bikes died while he tried to flee from police custody in Assam's Sivasagar district on Tuesday. 

The deceased bike thief who is identified as Babu Gowala jumped into a pond while he was being interrogated by the police regarding a bike theft case of one Putul Das who lost a Pulsar bike in neighboring Gaurisagar. 

Babu Gowala was arrested based on CCTV footage of a shop where it can be seen that Babu is stealing the Pulsar bike which was parked near the shop. 

Babu was immediately picked up from the pond by a team of police officials and was rushed to Sivasagar Civil Hospital in critical condition. However, the doctors declared him dead after examining him. 

Babu's wife in a statement said, "The police came to our house at night and started banging at our door and asked for Babu. We mistook them for child-lifters and so took our children with us and tried to hide at the back of our house. They kept saying that they will enquire about a stolen bike and will leave my husband the next day if nothing is found against him". 

"My husband agreed to go with them but instead was killed while in their custody. Also the police let us know about Babu's death in the morning and kept us in the dark about the whole incident" Babu's wife added. 

Following Babu's death, the locals gathered themselves around the police station and demanded a probe into the whole incident as they suspect he was being shot by the police. 

The in charge of the police station Satyajit Borthakur was relieved of his duties as an accused after being arrested is the sole responsibility of the police. 

The police have launched a probe into the whole matter where senior police officials would also be present.
