Guwahati: If reports are to be believed, 'Ratnakar' star Jatin Bora is likely to rejoin the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the crucial 2021 Assembly polls in the state.

This comes months after Jatin Bora's much-publicized split from the saffron power over its implementation of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act that seeks to fast-track citizenship to minority communities from the Muslim-majority countries of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.

Bora's quitting of the party came amid the raging protests against the bill-turned-act across Assam, some of which turned violent. The actor was also the chairman of the state's film finance development corporation.

Jatin Bora announced his decision at an AASU-sponsored meeting at Latasil field organized by the cultural fraternity to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) CAA in the presence of thousands of protestors which included artistes like singer Zubeen Garg. Bora also resigned as chief of the film body.

"I don't accept CAB. My identity of Jatin Bora is because of the people of Assam and I am with them on this issue," he said to raucous applause from the gathered CAA protesters.

The passage of the Act sparked massive protests in India. Protesters in Assam and other northeastern states reportedly oppose the grant of Indian citizenship to any refugee or immigrant, regardless of their religion, because they fear it would alter the region's demographic balance.

Months after Bora's public split, the prominent Assam actor has reportedly admitted his 'mistake' to the BJP's ideological mentor Rashtriya Sawayamsevak Sangha (RSS) for quitting the party earlier this year. The actor met some state-level BJP leaders to return to the party fold, reports said.

Meanwhile, popular singer Zubeen Garg, who was also at the forefront of the anti-CAA protests, has been appointed by the state agriculture department as its brand ambassador.

Meanwhile, Assam BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass has claimed that popular singers Zubeen Garg and Bipin Chaudang, who once led the agitation against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act, are now more amenable to talks with the saffron party. Dass has also hinted that the singers would join the ruling BJP party ahead of the crucial polls in 2021.
