Assam Police on Monday arrested an Afghan National identified as Madgai Hemat Khail from Kanishail for overstaying his visa in the country and have recovered several forged Indian documents from his possession.

KARIMGANJ: The Assam Police on Monday arrested an Afghan national here on charges of illegally staying in his country.

The apprehended foreign national identified as Madgai Hemat Khail is alleged to have overstayed in India beyond his visa tenure. As per police sources, he is a resident of the Afghan capital city Kabul.

Based on prior information, the Karimganj Police team launched the operation to nab Khail. He was reportedly arrested from his rented home in the Kanishail area, near Karimganj on Monday.

The Police further revealed that the Afghan National travelled to India few years ago with a valid visa and passport with the purpose of visit being his medical treatment. However, Khail even after the his visa expiry, did not return back to his home country.

Later, Khail reportedly married a woman after he met her during his stay in the country. The woman is identified as Fatima Begum hailing from Mangaldai in Assam's Darrang district.

Thereafter, as per Police sources, Khail got in touch with a broker who arranged various documents after his visa expired. The documents provided by the broker include a PAN card, a bank passbook, a driving licence among others.

With these Indian documents in his possession, he then shifted to Guwahati where he got employed in a finance company. Later he again shifted to Karimganj for some work and started residing in that rented home in the Kanishail locality from where he was arrested by the police.

According to a senior police official investigating the case, the documents procured allegedly from the broker showed Madgai Hemat Khail's name as Zahir Khan in order to avoid getting caught by authorities.

The Police which has already initiated a probe into the incident is considering all possible angles including the arrested foreign national's link to any militant organisation operating in the region.
