GUWAHATI: Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has reiterated its commitment of implementing Clause 6 of the Assam Accord in 2025 for constitutional safeguards to the indigenous people of the state. AGP president and minister Atul Bora and working president and minister Keshab Mahanta presented the party's vision for the new year at a press conference on Monday.
Clause 6 is one of the important provisions of the 1985 Assam Accord that brought an end to the six-year anti-foreigners' movement. It protects the cultural, social, and linguistic identity of Assamese people. Bora focused on the party's agenda of advancing these goals.
"The AGP is committed to protecting the rights of Assam's indigenous people and ensuring proper implementation of the Assam Accord," Bora said, terming 2025 as a crucial year for the fulfillment of these goals.
The Assam government has started acting on the 52 recommendations submitted by the Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma committee regarding Clause 6. Bora revealed that most of these recommendations are supposed to be rolled out by April 2025, and for some, even the state and central governments are required to partner.
Although Assam Jatiya Parishad and Raijor Dal are new regional parties, AGP officials reasserted their position as Assam's leading regional party. To strengthen grass-root contact, the party launched a year-long campaign known as "AGP in Every Village, AGP in Every Town City" to go with the people of the state.
In addition, 2025 would be declared the "Mother Tongue Year," with initiatives meant to popularize the mother tongues and to assimilate Assam's diverse communities under a singular roof.
Bora said, "Regionalism still forms the crux of Assam's identity, and the AGP has been committed to the development of the state in tandem with people's rights."
