BOKO: As Assam gears up for the second phase of Panchayat election, Chamaria constituency, predominantly inhabited by minority communities, has emerged as a focal point of high-stakes political contestation. Both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Opposition Congress have intensified their outreach in a bid to sway the electorate in this strategically significant seat.
On the Opposition front, All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary Manoj Chauhan, who has been stationed in Assam since April 26, exuded confidence in Congress’ prospects. Speaking to the media, Chauhan claimed that public discontent with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is palpable, fueling a renewed shift of trust toward Congress. “The people are dissatisfied with the Chief Minister, and they are now rallying behind Congress with new conviction,” he stated.
Chauhan also condemned Chief Minister Sarma’s recent controversial remark, in which the CM alleged that women had to compromise their dignity to secure government jobs during Congress rule. “Such statements are disgraceful. I call upon the Chief Minister to issue a public apology for his offensive comment,” Chauhan demanded.
Touching upon a national development, Chauhan credited Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for forcing the Centre's hand on the caste census. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has now agreed to conduct the caste survey, a move that comes after Rahul Gandhi’s determined two-year campaign. Initially, the Prime Minister resisted, but today, the government is compelled to adopt his vision. This will bring about a major shift in our social structure,” Chauhan asserted.
Meanwhile, the BJP has escalated its grassroots campaign. Cabinet Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass, on Sunday, spearheaded rallies in Tupamari under Chamaria constituency, mobilizing support for NDA-backed BJP candidates, including Hamida Ahmed (2 No. Sontali Tupamari Zilla Parishad), Manzila Ahmed (1 No. Bhakhuradia Gaon Panchayat), and Saidur Rahman (3 No. Tupamari Gaon Panchayat). Addressing the crowd, Minister Dass expressed optimism about the BJP’s prospects among minority voters, asserting that they are now politically astute and will vote with discernment. “We are confident that BJP and its allies will capture nearly 40% of Zila Parishad and Anchalik Panchayat seats in minority-dominated regions this time,” Das projected. He also announced that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would visit Sontali post the anticipated victory of BJP nominee Hamida Ahmed.
Dass was joined by South Kamrup BJP district President Anjan Goswami, senior district and mandal officials, and a large gathering of party supporters.
