DHUBRI: In a significant move, Assam police detained Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday while he was attempting to visit an eviction site in Dhubri district. The incident occurred near Santoshpur Noor Nabi Masjid, located in the Charuwa-Bakhra area under the Chapar revenue circle. The area has been the focus of a massive eviction drive launched by the district administration.

Authorities are clearing over 3,500 bighas of government land, where more than 2,000 families had reportedly settled for years. The land is intended for a proposed thermal power project under the Assam Power Development Corporation Limited (APDCL).

Local protests intensified as Akhil Gogoi tried to reach the site, with some residents blocking roads and expressing anger over the eviction. The police detained Gogoi, citing concerns over law and order.

Despite prior notices, many families voluntarily vacated their homes, but tensions remain high. The administration has assured a one-time financial aid of ₹50,000 to each evicted family and potential rehabilitation for the landless.

Meanwhile, the locals protested over the imminent eviction of nearly 4,000 bighas of land in Alamganj and Gouripur. Following reports of eviction from government land in Alamganj near Gouripur in Dhubri district, thousands of families living in the area have become deeply concerned.
