GUWAHATI : Revenue worth crores of rupees was generated through liquor sale in Assam's Guwahati city. The entire city celebrated and welcomed the new year in a grand way. 

However, the top spot has been snatched and conquered by the liquor sale during this period. According to the reports, liquor of approximately Rs 4.80 crore was sold on 31st of December 2022 while Rs 3.21 crore on 1st of January 2023. 

The sale has been made from Kamrup Metropolitan District alone. This has evidently crossed the previous year's record with a huge difference. Liquor worth Rs 3,66,89,00 was sold in New Year's eve of 2022. 

However, it is to be noted that, even if the liquor consumption has increased tremendously, but zero death cases of road accidents has been recorded in new year's eve in Kamrup. The state administration had warned the citizens prior to the celebration phase against consequences of drink and drive. 

Hiranya Kumar Barman, the DCP (traffic) had made the public aware against driving under the influence of alcohol. Several advisories were issued ahead of the new year. 

As per a report from the excise department, until 30th of November 2022, citizens of Guwahati has consumed almost 14282618.6455 litres of alcohol. The city has gulped down almost 1.42 crore litres of alcohol since January to November 2022. 

According to the department, there has been an increase with 15% in liquor consumption in 2022 as compared to 2021. In 2021, the ratio had stick to 1.25 crore litres. The liquor shops which went through a heavy business loss prior to 2022, witnessed a surge in sale since Durga Puja celebration in October last year. 

The reports of excise department also states that since 2015, 2022 has had the city's highest alcohol consumption rate.
