Assam: American Tourist Dies in Hojai Road Mishap

American tourist Berry Thompson died in a Hojai road accident during a motorcycle tour in Northeast India. Her bike collided with a truck; police are investigating.

HOJAI: In a tragic incident, an American tourist, Berry Thompson, was killed in a road accident in Assam's Hojai district on December 21.The adventurous traveler, who was on a motorcycle tour exploring the beautiful landscapes of Northeast India, met the unfortunate mishap.

The accident took place when Thompson was traveling from Silchar to Tezpur. She took a turn when her two-wheeler hit a truck, Hojai Superintendent of Police Saurabh Gupta said. Preliminary investigation points to misjudging the maneuver, which has caused the accident.

Emergency services rushed Thompson to the nearest hospital soon after the accident. Yet, the doctors could not save her, and she died due to the wounds while under treatment.

Police have taken the truck driver into custody for interrogation. The police have also taken away the vehicle that collided with the one in which she was travelling. The entire sequence of events is now being investigated.

The U.S. Consulate has been informed. The body of Thompson is currently kept at Nagaon Medical College and Hospital, where the needed procedures are being done for repatriation.

Thompson's death shows that traveling by road is never free from danger, no matter how experienced the traveler. Her tour of the beautiful Northeast region, meant to be a memorable adventure, ended in heartbreak. This event has drawn attention to road safety problems, especially on highways traveled by tourists.
