Assam: Amid Criticism, Ajmal Stands Firm on 'Muslims No. 1 in Crime' Statement

GUWAHATI: Badruddin Ajmal, Chief of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), is holding his ground amid criticism for his recent statements on crime rates among Muslims. Despite receiving backlash from various quarters, Ajmal asserted that he did not make any incorrect claims.

He argued that the elevated crime rates among Muslims could be attributed to a lack of education within the community. According to Ajmal, many Muslim leaders in the past have failed to prioritize education and have, instead, exploited their own community for political gain.

He said, "Many Muslims have become leaders in the past by deceiving the people of their community. They did nothing to impart education to Muslims. On the contrary, they made Muslims slaves and did politics."

Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, responded to Ajmal's comments, stating that his party would provide a fitting response if any AIUDF MLA raised these issues in the Assembly. Saikia added that Ajmal had a history of making controversial statements.

Saikia remarked, "If any MLA from Badruddin Ajmal's party raises these words in the Assembly, we will give proper answer to it. The AIUDF Chief has the habit of saying controversial things. It is not at all new."

Senior advocate of Gauhati High Court, Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Chowdhury, questioned Ajmal's track record in bringing about reforms in the Muslim society despite being a long-time Member of Parliament. He suggested that Ajmal's remarks may serve the interests of those engaging in Hindutva politics and believed that there might be a political agenda behind his controversial comments.

During a recent event at a private college in Assam's Goalpara district, Ajmal had remarked, "Crimes like robbery, dacoity, rape, loot – we are No.1 in all. We are also No.1 in going to jail. Our children find no time to go to schools and colleges, but find enough time to gamble, to cheat others. For all such wrong things – ask who's involved? It's Muslims."

Ajmal's statements have sparked a significant debate, with critics raising concerns about the implications of his remarks.
