DERGAON: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has inaugurated the first phase of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Assam's Dergaon on March 15. He will also lay the foundation stone for the next phase of the project. Shah arrived in Dergaon on March 14 as part of his three-day visit to Assam and Mizoram.

The academy, spread across 340-acre, is being refurbished in two phases at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,024 crore. The first phase, costing Rs. 167.4 crore, features a five-story building with smart classrooms, a weapon simulator, research labs, administrative offices, a museum and a modern parade ground. Officials said the new infrastructure will offer trainees both theoretical and practical police training.

The weapon training simulator will help law enforcement personnel to develop real-world combat skills safely, eliminating risks. It is adaptable to various firearms, improving firing skills and tactical training.

The academy’s smart classrooms will have interactive digital boards and personal computers while the seminar rooms, a library, and computer labs will further enhance learning facilities.

The second phase, estimated at Rs. 425.48 crore, will focus on housing infrastructure, including residential quarters for 240 families, hostels for 312 officers/personnel and accommodation for 2,640 trainees. The Lachit Barphukan Police Academy is designed as a state-of-the-art training center to strengthen Assam’s law enforcement and modernize police training.
