Assam: Angry Mob Assault On-Duty Policemen, Set Ablaze Batadrava Police Station

Guwahati: A violent and rowdy crowd set ablaze the Batadrava police station in the Nagaon district of Assam on May 21 and they also physically assaulted the cops.

The assault comes after a person, who was allegedly picked up by police, reportedly died while in custody at Batadrava police station.

A furious mob of men and women can be seen storming the Batadrava police station in the visuals which surfaced online. The angry mob took the law into their own hands when they assaulted a couple of policemen who were on duty after which, they set the police station on fire.

The law went for a toss and the mob had absolutely no regard for it. The violence also led to two police officers getting injured.

"The scenes were absolutely terrifying as the mob of around 2,000 people - both men and women included - stormed Batadrava police station after the alleged death of a person named Safikul Islam, a fish trader by profession, allegedly died in police custody. The mob then started assaulting the policemen on duty and later set Batadrava police station on fire," a local resident said.

Additional forces were called in to keep the situation under control and Nagaon SP Leena Doley and other senior officials of Nagaon police also arrived.

The police have identified three persons who were part of the mob and they were subsequently arrested for their involvement in the violence.

"We have arrested three persons who were involved in the violence. This is absolutely unacceptable. Whatever may be the provocation, no one can take up law into their hands. We will look into every aspect of the incident and take action," Nagaon SP Leena Doley said.

Meanwhile, according to reports, the Batadrava police had picked up Safiqul Islam of Salnabari under the Dhing police station on the night of May 20. His family accused the cops of demanding Rs 10,000 and a duck for his release.

Safiqul allegedly died in police custody and his family found his body at the local hospital on May 21.
