GUWAHATI: At a time when Assam, like the rest of the country, is suffering from the demonic grasp of the COVID-19 pandemic, cases of fake doctors getting nabbed have witnessed a massive spike.

The Assam police have reportedly arrested a fake doctor from Sonari who has been practicing medicine at the Naa-phuk Tea garden.

Acting on an e-mail complaint filed by a Guwahati-based doctor the Sonari police busted the fake doctor. The accused has been identified as Gakul Barua. Sources said that the accused used a fake registration number as the investigation police did not find his name in the Assam Medical Council.

Police registered a case under section 147/21 of the Assam Medical Council Act, 1999 R/W sections 420/468/471/336 of the Indian Panel Code against him. Police also recovered from him some bogus certificates.

Local people said that the accused practiced medicine taking advantage of the gullibility of the tea garden workers.

It could be noted that the Assam police nabbed at least three fake doctors from different parts of the state after the onslaught of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Among the arrested one was from Majuli where he had practiced medicine for the last several years.

Reportedly, a man from Uttar Pradesh named Uttam Kushwaha set up his medical chamber near the Jengraimukh Police Station in Lakhimi gaon and had been treating patients.

A large team of civil administration and police officers nabbed the fraudulent doctor after receiving a tip. The squad also seized lakhs of rupees in cash and medical tools from the imposter doctor.

During the interrogation, the accused confessed that he purchased a fraudulent medical education certificate for Rs.2000 in 1991 and has been treating patients in Majuli since then, taking advantage of the locals' gullibility.

He admitted that, in addition to treating people with various conditions such as fever, discomfort, and so on, he also treated dental patients.
